A place of triathletes who want to know about strength training for performance enhancement

I guess you may be wondering, what was my inspiration behind this page?
Well, to me it seems that strength and conditioning is one element of triathlon training that the vast majority seem to neglect. So many people think of 'strength' training, and straight away conjure up images of big dudes lifting heavy weights in the gym, adding muscle mass and getting bulky. Typically, the majority of triathletes shy away from S&C work as they are worried about packing on this excess muscle and therefore weight, and ending up heavy and slow. They're also within the mindset that if they could find time to do some strength work, that time would always be best served on SBR training. To be honest, it's really no wonder. Take a look at any magazine or book related to tri training. If there are strength programs in there, they look more like what you'd find in the regime of someone looking to get ripped for the beach. Isolated exercises such as leg extensions and curls, seated machine presses, sit ups and maybe a few leg presses. This isn't the way for a triathlete to train strength. Not to actually enhance performance anyway. A program that is truly tri-specific, can have massive benefits to you as a triathlete, from injury prevention to hill climbing, yet when it comes to S&C, so few actually train as a triathlete. The reason for this page is to help triathletes understand the benefits of strength training, and learn how to appropriately implement it for enhanced performance in training and on race day. It's a place for like minded people who not only love the sport of triathlon, but also recognise the benefits of integrating appropriate S&C into their program. Share your experiences, your workouts, and your thoughts on the subject, and be part of a new era of triathletes who embrace S&C as an integral part of their training ;-) Andy Sloan |
